Wilders does not incite hatred, says judge

Anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders’ comments about the Koran and the prophet Mohammed do not incite hatred or violence against Muslims, a court in Rotterdam ruled on Monday.

The judge rejected a case brought the Islamic federation (NIF) saying that Wilders’ comments were provocative but did not break the law.

‘A member of parliament must be able to express his standpoint, if necessary in sharp terms,’ the judge is quoted as saying by ANP news service. ‘Wilders’ right to freedom of expression is the deciding factor here’.

The NIF wanted to know if Wilders had broken the law with his public declaration in August last year that the Koran is a fascist book and comments that Mohammed was a barbarian.

According to the judge, the term fascism must be seen in a broader context. The NIF associated it with the Holocaust and ‘other evil practices from Nazi Germany’. But fascism should, said the judge, be seen as ‘a collective term for ideologies which fundamentally embrace a totalitarian political system which leaves no room for people with other ideas’.

When it came to Mohammed, the NIF was unable during the hearing to deny that he was a barbarian, reports ANP. Furthermore, the organisation was not able to disprove the fact that Islam consists of beliefs that are in contradiction to democratic principles, the judge said.

Wilders, who is leader of the anti-immigration PVV party (which has nine of the 150 seats in parliament) said he is pleased with the ruling.

‘I have always been of the opinion that I must be free to point out the dangers of the ongoing Islamisation of the west and the Netherlands in the political debate. I have never felt that I have gone over the top. You must be able to make sharp comments in the political debate, ’ ANP quotes him as saying.

Hirshi Ali wipes the floor with Premier Balkenende

AMSTERDAM, 20/11/07 - Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali fiercely criticised Premier Jan Peter Balkenende yesterday. "He does not behave like a premier but like little Jan Peter. If something happens to me, he is responsible,' she told De Pers newspaper.

The cabinet, with the approval of the Lower House, decided last month no longer to cooperate with the protection of Hirsi Ali in the US. She moved there in September 2006 after resigning as a conservative (VVD) MP following a conflict with then Integration Minister Rita Verdonk over her integrity as a former asylum seeker.

When in the Netherlands, Hirsi Ali is still protected, but she says Balkenende has openly suggested that she would be better to stay in the US than to come back to the Netherlands. Hirsi Ali calls it immoral that Balkenende advises her to stay away. "This is not Zimbabwe, this is a constitutional state." With sarcasm, Hirsi Ali challenges the premier to withdraw her Dutch citizenship. This is the only thing he can do to prevent her coming to the Netherlands, in her view.

"I became a Lower House member in the Netherlands, and there, my profile became so sharp that I was seriously threatened." According to the Somalia-born apostate of Islam, the Netherlands is therefore morally responsible for her protection. "If things go wrong, Balkenende is responsible, absolutely."

"What he does not understand is that this is no ordinary row between 'Jan Petertje' and 'Ayaantje' (little Jan Peter and little Ayaan). He is premier. He wants to be premier so dearly. This has a number of advantages, but also restrictions. I have often been accused of not behaving like a parliamentarian. He does not behave like a premier," says Hirsi Ali in De Pers.

Hirsi Ali suggests that Balkenende does not speak like a premier but "like little Jan Peter." In that case, "my answer is that he should not interfere with my agenda. That is indecent. Although I am still assiduously looking for a good secretary. He can apply."

Last Saturday, Hirsi Ali already said in NRC Handelsblad that Balkenende has damaged the credibility of politics with the attitude to her protection. "With this man, the entire political profession is denigrated." (...) "This concerns all Dutch citizens who will be threatened in the future," according to Hirsi Ali.

New derivation of equations governing the greenhouse effect reveals "runaway warming" impossible

Miklós Zágoni isn't just a physicist and environmental researcher. He is also a global warming activist and Hungary's most outspoken supporter of the Kyoto Protocol. Or was.

That was until he learned the details of a new theory of the greenhouse effect, one that not only gave far more accurate climate predictions here on Earth, but Mars too. The theory was developed by another Hungarian scientist, Ferenc Miskolczi, an atmospheric physicist with 30 years of experience and a former researcher with NASA's Ames Research Center.

After studying it, Zágoni stopped calling global warming a crisis, and has instead focused on presenting the new theory to other climatologists. The data fit extremely well. "I fell in love," he stated at the International Climate Change Conference this week.

"Runaway greenhouse theories contradict energy balance equations," Miskolczi states. Just as the theory of relativity sets an upper limit on velocity, his theory sets an upper limit on the greenhouse effect, a limit which prevents it from warming the Earth more than a certain amount.

How did modern researchers make such a mistake? They relied upon equations derived over 80 years ago, equations which left off one term from the final solution.

Miskolczi's story reads like a book. Looking at a series of differential equations for the greenhouse effect, he noticed the solution -- originally done in 1922 by Arthur Milne, but still used by climate researchers today -- ignored boundary conditions by assuming an "infinitely thick" atmosphere. Similar assumptions are common when solving differential equations; they simplify the calculations and often result in a result that still very closely matches reality. But not always.

Veteran goes after anti-troop politicians

Bill Tramble, a veteran and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion wants politicians banned from legion halls and other military ceremonies unless and until they change their minds, an idea that is not likely to get off the ground. Tammy Wheeler, the secretary of the Alberta Northwest Territories Royal Canadian Legion was quoted as saying that their members don’t get involved in politics and will not be supporting Tramble’s plan. It’s nice that so many sacrificed their lives for the freedom not to get involved in politics.

There is nothing more hypocritical than attendance at November 11 ceremonies by these anti-war political types who throw on a poppy and pretend that they care. They march up to the cenotaph looking all somber when the reality is that they have no use for the troops. All these troops are doing is participating in George Bush’s war. Those that are being honored for giving up so much are really no different than the men and women who are currently serving in the Canadian forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Yet while the politicians cry tears over those who paid the ultimate price in previous wars, they find honouring our current troops by putting a decal on a vehicle way too onerous.
