The estranged wife of a Muslim television executive feared for her life after filing for divorce last month from her "abusive" husband, her attorney said — and was found beheaded Thursday in his upstate New York TV studio.
Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37, was found dead on Thursday at the offices of Bridges TV in Orchard Park, N.Y., near Buffalo. Her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, has reportedly been charged with second-degree murder.
"She was very much aware of the potential ramification of her filing for divorce might have," said attorney Elizabeth DiPirro, whose law firm, Hogan Willig, represented Aasiya Hassan in the divorce proceeding. "But she wanted to proceed despite the potential for it to erupt."
DiPirro said the couple had "physical confrontations off and on" for their entire eight-year marriage that had recently escalated to death threats. The grounds for divorce were "cruel and inhuman treatment," DiPirro said, referring to mulitple prior incidents of abuse. She declined to elaborate.

Explosives Found, Defused in Paris Department Store
PARIS — French police neutralized five sticks of explosives discovered in the restrooms of a prestigious department store in Paris on Tuesday following a warning from a group demanding the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan.
Agence France-Presse said it received a letter from a group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front saying that "several bombs" had been planted in the Printemps store.
AFP reported that the letter called for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan by February next year. The bombs were supposed to go off on Wednesday, the group said.
France has about 2,600 troops serving with NATO in Afghanistan, though President Nicolas Sarkozy has said more will be sent.
French television also said five explosive devices had been defused, but police could not immediately confirm.
"Following a classic tip off, police evacuated Le Printemps store. A suspect package was found and is being examined," the police spokesman said, giving no further information.
Some French media said explosives had been found but did not have detonators attached.
The Printemps store is on Boulevard Haussmann in the city center, which is normally packed at this time of year with Christmas shoppers. Police closed off the streets around the store and were directing traffic away from the area, a Reuters reporter said.
Anti-crime brigades and demining teams have been called in.

Today, I filed a complaint to the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) for "hate propaganda" against Montreal salafi imam Hammaad Abu Sulaiman Al-Dameus Hayiti who officiates at the Association Musulmane de Montréal Est mosque. The complaint relates to his book L'Islam ou l'Intégrisme ? À la lumière du Qor'an et de la Sounnah downloadable from the Internet, and his extremist teachings that are also broadcast on the Internet.
The teachings of imam Al-Hayiti are suprematists, misogynistic and hateful. According to the imam, his fellow non-Muslims are "koufars" (unbelievers, infidels, impious), Québec women are perverse, and the population is "stupid and ignorant." The imam also calls for the destruction of the "idols" of the West: democracy, human rights, secularism, freedom and modernity. By disseminating his teachings on the Internet, the imam tries to win adherents to his extreme views.

On September 11, 2001, this nation was attacked by an enemy whose vision of the future, whose culture and value system, and whose concepts of life and death are a universe apart from ours. In Gaza City earlier this month, an Israeli air strike killed two Hamas terrorists who were about to launch missiles at the Israeli cities of Sderot and Ashkelon. One of those killed was a son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Haya. At the funeral of his son, al-Haya said, "I thank God for this gift. This is the 10th member of my family to be martyred". And in Pakistan, a jihadist wrapped a baby in an explosive belt and detonated it killing scores of Muslims.
If it is not yet clear, the rules of war have changed. Until this enemy is vanquished, there can be no Islamic Renaissance. And unless this enemy is vanquished, the horrors of the 20th century will pale in the face of what lies ahead.
Whether we choose to believe it or not, we are engaged in the defining ideological war of the 21st century. But to defeat this enemy, we must first understand it, so let me begin with some history.
Historically, the enormous changes in the West that took place during and after the Renaissance in the 16th century barely made a ripple in the Arab world, and only with the dawn of the 20th century did the Arabs finally begin to realize the implications of their backwardness at which point, they chose to portray themselves as victims, searching for scapegoats and excuses rather than confront their own inadequacies.

An upcoming joint US-Israel report on the September 6 IAF strike on a Syrian facility will claim that former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein transferred weapons of mass destruction to the country, Channel 2 stated Monday.
Furthermore, according to a report leaked to the TV channel, Syria has arrested 10 intelligence officials following the assassination of Hizbullah terror chief Imad Mughniyeh.

Anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders’ comments about the Koran and the prophet Mohammed do not incite hatred or violence against Muslims, a court in Rotterdam ruled on Monday.
The judge rejected a case brought the Islamic federation (NIF) saying that Wilders’ comments were provocative but did not break the law.
‘A member of parliament must be able to express his standpoint, if necessary in sharp terms,’ the judge is quoted as saying by ANP news service. ‘Wilders’ right to freedom of expression is the deciding factor here’.
The NIF wanted to know if Wilders had broken the law with his public declaration in August last year that the Koran is a fascist book and comments that Mohammed was a barbarian.
According to the judge, the term fascism must be seen in a broader context. The NIF associated it with the Holocaust and ‘other evil practices from Nazi Germany’. But fascism should, said the judge, be seen as ‘a collective term for ideologies which fundamentally embrace a totalitarian political system which leaves no room for people with other ideas’.
When it came to Mohammed, the NIF was unable during the hearing to deny that he was a barbarian, reports ANP. Furthermore, the organisation was not able to disprove the fact that Islam consists of beliefs that are in contradiction to democratic principles, the judge said.
Wilders, who is leader of the anti-immigration PVV party (which has nine of the 150 seats in parliament) said he is pleased with the ruling.
‘I have always been of the opinion that I must be free to point out the dangers of the ongoing Islamisation of the west and the Netherlands in the political debate. I have never felt that I have gone over the top. You must be able to make sharp comments in the political debate, ’ ANP quotes him as saying.

Hirshi Ali wipes the floor with Premier Balkenende

AMSTERDAM, 20/11/07 - Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali fiercely criticised Premier Jan Peter Balkenende yesterday. "He does not behave like a premier but like little Jan Peter. If something happens to me, he is responsible,' she told De Pers newspaper.
The cabinet, with the approval of the Lower House, decided last month no longer to cooperate with the protection of Hirsi Ali in the US. She moved there in September 2006 after resigning as a conservative (VVD) MP following a conflict with then Integration Minister Rita Verdonk over her integrity as a former asylum seeker.
When in the Netherlands, Hirsi Ali is still protected, but she says Balkenende has openly suggested that she would be better to stay in the US than to come back to the Netherlands. Hirsi Ali calls it immoral that Balkenende advises her to stay away. "This is not Zimbabwe, this is a constitutional state." With sarcasm, Hirsi Ali challenges the premier to withdraw her Dutch citizenship. This is the only thing he can do to prevent her coming to the Netherlands, in her view.
"I became a Lower House member in the Netherlands, and there, my profile became so sharp that I was seriously threatened." According to the Somalia-born apostate of Islam, the Netherlands is therefore morally responsible for her protection. "If things go wrong, Balkenende is responsible, absolutely."
"What he does not understand is that this is no ordinary row between 'Jan Petertje' and 'Ayaantje' (little Jan Peter and little Ayaan). He is premier. He wants to be premier so dearly. This has a number of advantages, but also restrictions. I have often been accused of not behaving like a parliamentarian. He does not behave like a premier," says Hirsi Ali in De Pers.
Hirsi Ali suggests that Balkenende does not speak like a premier but "like little Jan Peter." In that case, "my answer is that he should not interfere with my agenda. That is indecent. Although I am still assiduously looking for a good secretary. He can apply."

NIJMEGEN, 02/04/08 - A school in Nijmegen yesterday cancelled a cartoon exhibition about discrimination following threats by Muslim pupils. Before this decision was taken, the exhibition was already literally destroyed.
Muslim pupils of the ROC Nijmegen, a large school with largely immigrant pupils, pulled cartoons from the walls shortly before these were to be presented officially. They also threatened to set the school alight. The school management decided to call off the opening.
In the exhibition, artists expressed their vision on discrimination in a humorist manner. "My expectation was that the pupils would be able to laugh about it", Ralph Sluis stated. He heads a local anti discrimination organization. Sluis was the exhibition's coordinator.
A total of fifteen cartoonists worked on the exhibition. According to Sluis, the trouble was sparked by a work by cartoonist Peter de Wit, which shows two women in niqabs, the all-covering Islamic garments.
In the cartoon, one niqabed woman tells the other: "You filthy Muslim". The other one replies: "Yes I know, I'll wash". This woman smells bad, the cartoon shows.
The cartoon's message is that someone is not filthy if they wear a niqab. "A small group of pupils interpreted the cartoons in an entirely different way than the artist intended", Sluis stated.

China has betrayed one its closest allies by providing the United Nations with intelligence on Iran's efforts to acquire nuclear technology, diplomats have revealed.
Concern over Tehran's secretive research programme has increased in recent weeks after officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN's nuclear watchdog, discovered that Iran had obtained information on how to manufacture nuclear-armed weapons.
Beijing is believed to have decided to assist the inspectors after documents seized from Iranian officials included blueprints for "shaping" uranium metal into warheads, the testing of high explosives used to detonate radioactive material and the procurement of dual-use technology.
Much of the new material was presented to the governors of the Vienna-based IAEA in February. That meeting is said to have triggered China's change of heart.
Diplomats described Beijing's decision to provide material related to Iran to the IAEA as a potentially significant breakthrough.
Chinese designs for centrifuges that refine uranium into a "weaponised" state have been found in Iran but these are thought to have come through a network controlled by the disgraced Pakistani scientist AQ Khan.
John Bolton, the former American ambassador to the United Nations, said suspicions over the leakage of technology from China to Iran had long centred on uranium enrichment technology and their bilateral ballistic missile trade.
